NEW - SPAN's Manifesto 2010 -2015- NEW

This is the Manifesto that we have taken to Parliamentarians and that we hope will influence any new Government in their policies towards single parents over the next five years. The Manifesto

The key themes were identified by single parents in our Participatory One Parent Proof Project. These were then further developed at our well attended conference in November 2009. Participants at the conference joined roundtables to share thinking, experience and expertise on the key themes. We were also fortunate to have key note speakers Yvette Cooper MP Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Andrew Selous MP and Conservative Shadow Work and Pensions Minister. Attendees included single parents, one parent family groups, Job Centre Plus representatives, civil servants, family practitioners, anti-poverty organisations, researchers and grant-making bodies who put forward ideas.

We have set out our policy priorities in five major arenas:

  • Financial Security for All Families;
  • Aiming High through Education and Training;
  • Promoting Children's and Parents Well-being;
  • Quality Childcare Addressing the Needs of Children and Paid Work; and
  • Community Empowerment and Participation.

We have also produced an additional document, Appendices, which complements our policy priorities. This sets out the research and evidence from our contact with single parents to give further detail and additional weight to the Policy Priorities.
